Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an integrative psychotherapy approach to trauma treatment that is supported by extensive research. To date, EMDR therapy has helped millions of people find relief from various forms of psychological stress. EMDR treatment incorporates eye movement techniques to help clients process difficult trauma memories. The goal of this treatment is to allow a survivor to no longer relive traumatic images, sounds, and feelings when the event is brought to mind.
Trauma memories can often seem "frozen in time," affecting our minds and bodies as if we were experiencing the trauma all over again.
Such memories may have a lasting, negative effect on how a person sees themselves, the world, and the way they relate to other people. EMDR incorporates eye movement as a means of directly accessing and affecting the way our brain processes this information. During deep sleep, we experience rapid eye movements as a natural part of our body’s rest and rejuvenation cycle. By integrating the body’s natural eye movement processing,
EMDR allows clients to reprocess their memories and experience them in a less emotionally distressing way.
During our sessions, I will work with you to identify the negative messages connected to your past trauma. I will help you build and strengthen your internal resources, or "safe places" in your mind. This foundation of safety will allow you to feel supported as we work through painful memories. As our work together progresses, you may still remember the painful things that have happened, but you will experience them as less upsetting and less disruptive to your life. Our work together will help you to experience your present life with newfound freedom!
